The Meaning of Ash Wednesday

It’s Wednesday afternoon, a little after 4:30 pm, and I find myself once again at Case’s Ash Wednesday service, co-sponsored by Newman Catholic Campus Ministries and United Protestant Campus Ministries. I am looking out at the congregation of over 80 students and community members sitting in Case Western Reserve’s Amasa Stone Chapel. Unlike the others, I’m seated on the altar in the choir stalls alongside the other musicians. For us, this feels like any routine performance at church–– 6 verses of “Amazing Grace” accompanying the congregation, two hymns for the imposition of ashes, the prelude and the postlude (the Gigue from J.S Bach’s Second Cello Suite, played by myself).
