|The Rev. Barbara J. Essex is the
Executive Director of UPCaM,
the Protestant “pastor” at CWRU and is an ordained United Church of Christ minister. She makes herself available to students for informal conversation, spiritual guidance, and as a listening ear when a student needs to talk with someone. In addition to her ministry on campus, Barbara is available for supply preaching; mission presentations; and, leadership development and support. She also leads retreats, workshops, and Bible studies; conducts weddings, funerals, and memorial services; and teaches on a variety of subjects. Being out in the community in any capacity brings to light UPCaM’s mission and presence in Cleveland.
Rev. Barbara is a nationally known writer and speaker. Some of her books include: Bad Girls of the Bible: Exploring Women of Questionable Virtue; Bad Boys of the New Testament; Krazy Kinfolk: Exploring Dysfunctional Families in the Bible; Misbehavin' Monarchs: Exploring Questionable Rulers in the Bible; Bible for Vital Congregations; 52 Ways to Ignite Your Congregation-Bible Study; and her latest, Girlfriends: Exploring Women's Relationships in the Bible.Her books are serious Bible studies with a twist--bringing to life biblical characters we know and love...and some we love to hate.
Rev. Barbara's ministry has taken her around the globe--preaching and teaching and empowering women and men of all walks of life. She has served in local churches, on national and regional denominational staffs, and in seminary and college settings. A common thread among all of her experiences has been a love for and connection with young adults. She is excited about helping to create a space for spiritual inquiry and exploration. She is committed to identifying, empowering, affirming, and commissioning student leaders.
