Activities for the Academic Year

Social Programs, Retreats and Fellowship Opportunities

Each year, the UPCaM student organization decides what student social programs will take place during the year.  These events are announced in the weekly UPCaM e-newsletter and have included Friday movie nights, student retreats at Valleevue Farm, and Faculty Firesides (faculty invite students into their homes for an evening of discussion and refreshment).   The first student retreat is scheduled for September 21-22,2007.

 Community Service Learning

UPCaM students reach out to the community and to the world in several ways, including:

Saturday Morning Tutoring (Cleveland School Students) at Covenant

Bread for the World  (World Hunger)

Case Cooperation Circle  (Student Inter-Faith Group)

Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity

     Alternative Spring Break with Habitat

Other emerging service learning opportunities during the year

Thursday Night Coffee House

Students will help to create this “safe” space that is non-alcoholic, drug and smoke-free.  The coffee will be good, the conversation will be informal but supportive of the best of campus life.  Programs will be planned by the UPCaM student organization and will include movie nights, "deep thought" discussion nights, open microphone for poetry and music, and even watching favorite Thursday evening television programs together!

Science and Religion Dialogue Group

This group meets regularly during the year to discuss issues of faith and science.  It is open to students, staff, faculty, and administration and the focus this year will be on planning a conference on ecology, environmental concerns, and global warming.

Poetry and Faith Group

This is a very informal poetry group where members may read from their own poetry or from another poet they admire.  The group meets monthly and is open to the community.  This intergenerational aspect of the poetry and faith group allows students to meet folks from outside the campus community who share the love of poetry.

What is “Spiritual Direction”?

Spiritual direction is for those who are feeling as though they are at a “growing point” in their Christian faith.  Through a series of four to six sixty minute conferences, Dr. Hauenstein will help you identify where you have been in your spiritual life, where you are now,  and will offer resources  and suggestions as to how you might take the next step in your spiritual journey.  This spiritual direction is available to all students, faculty, administration, and staff at no cost.

Pastoral Care

Kim Hauenstein, Executive Director and Campus Minister, is ordained as a United Methodist minister, serving for the past eighteen years as the campus minister at the University of Arizona in Tucson and at our Cleveland campuses through United Protestant Campus Ministries in Cleveland.    He performs student weddings and is available for support, pastoral care, and crisis intervention on all of our campuses.  Dr. Hauenstein also offers an individualized program in Spiritual Direction.

Worship Opportunities

Worship opportunities with UPCaM occur throughout the academic year with our Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, devotions at the weekly Lunch Bunch discussion groups, and the Good Friday Service in the Taizé tradition.  UPCaM works in cooperation, not competition, with our area churches and can help students locate a church home.  Information about area churches can be found on the UPCaM website:  go to www.upcam.org and click on “Area Churches.”  Denominational websites are also available as links to the UPCaM website.

Kim A. Hauenstein, D.Min., is the Executive Director of UPCaM and campus minister for UPCaM at Case Western Reserve University (including the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Music), Cleveland State University, and Cuyahoga Community College, where he also teaches The History of Western Christianity, Introduction to Religious Studies, and The Religions of China and Japan.  Kim is available to talk to students, faculty, staff, and administration on any of our campuses.  He may be reached at (216) 421-9614, ext. 301, or by e-mail at KimAHauenstein@aol.com .

"...an open-minded, inclusive, progressive campus ministry where we appreciate and learn from each other's differences and invite individuals into dialogue rather than force beliefs on others..."
